OG ended up low... Does anyone have some DME?

#1 Post by mpeterie1 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 8:09 pm

So when I made the switch to all grain this summer I assumed I wouldn't neet malt extract anymore... Well, tonight brought me back to Earth, I have 6 gallons of American Wheat that ended up at 1.028. I hopped it with some cascades and centennial at the end for flavor so I was afraid to keep the boil going thinking it would turn into an IPA. Here's what I did:

grains:
4 lbs 2 row
4 lbs white wheat malt

Hops
60 min- .5 oz williamette
30 min- .5 oz williamette
15 min- 1oz cascade
flameout- .5 oz centennial

safale 05 dry yeast

I'm afraid I overhopped it if I'm going to leave it as is, what do you guys think? I am thinking I need to add some DME but I'm very open to suggestions.

If I could buy a couple pounds off of someone in the Lawrence area it would save me a trip to the city on Monday.

Thanks, pm me if you can hook me up with some DME.

I don't have any DME for you, but for only using 8lbs of grain, you got the correct OG for what you brewed. You should be using about twice that amount of grain for a 5~6 gallon batch of beer.

If you don't score any DME off the board there is a home brew shop in north Topeka called Ale n Vino. They are open Monday through Saturday.
Thanks!

It was a Northern Brewer kit, the last 5 gallon kit I bought from them gave me about 7.5 gallons of wort at the target OG so I didn't think much of it before I brewed. I may be thinking about this wrong but I thought ideally I could get roughly 37 grain units out of each pound of wheat and 2 row malt. 37x8/6 gallons=49.3 which puts me at 1.049 w/ 100% efficiency. Does that mean I got 57% mash efficiency?

I could try and blame it on my 4 month old son, it was his first time to help me brew and we let our sparge water get a little cool through the process...

57% sounds about right. I don't think I have enough DME to even make a starter. B&B is open Sundays now 12 - 5 if nobody in Lawrence has any DME.
