Need to make a 1056 yeast starter

#1 Post by Glenn » Mon Aug 16, 2010 10:20 am

I'm going to do a partial boil extract kit, and I have a 1056 smack pack. I know I could just go with the smack pack straight up, but I'd prefer a starter. Problem is, I've never done one.

So, does anybody have any DME I could borrow/buy? I'd trade my smack pack for a starter too, even though I know I'd be getting the better end of the deal. And now a thought just occurred to me...does a smack pack preclude the need for a starter?

Also, the kit is listed as a 1040 OG, so would that information factor into the size of the starter?
Life begins at 60. 1.060, that is.

Glenn, I have plenty of dme since I got some at the last grain buy. Just give me a call and you can come over and borrow a cup or two.

In theory, one smack pack or vial will ferment 5 gallons of 1.040 SG wort.

Smack the pack and dump it into one quart of starter wort (3oz DME to 1 quart water).
Early morning of the brew day will work. Shake the solution when you walk by and admire it!

That's about all there is to it, even I can do it

Take Joe up on his offer.
Have Fun!
